The Memory Tree

In partnership with Trees For Life, Alfred James established the Memory Tree program in 1991.

Trees For Life members plant native Memory Trees to improve wildlife habitat and air quality and to reduce erosion and salinity. Alfred James donates the trees and once planted, a certificate is presented to the bereaved along with information about the Memory Trees.

The Memory Tree program has helped to re-vegetate thousands of hectares in state national parks in Cobbler Creek and O’Halloran Hill, and more recently, on the land surrounding the animal habitats at Monarto Zoological Park which has also been successfully revegetated  with 1250 seedlings provided annually over a 15 year period.

Trees For Life and Alfred James Funeral Home have now established a Memory Tree Walk in Kinchina Conservation Park and are also planting seedlings at a nearby conservation property called Frahn’s Farm. These plantings are providing much needed habitat for woodland bird species whose population is declining.

Alfred James Funeral Homes consider The Memory Tree Program an important and lasting example of the James tradition of personalised care for their clients. Those who are bereaved find some comfort in the knowledge that there is a tree growing in the memory of their loved one.

Additional Memory Trees can be purchased by our clients and also by people who have not used Alfred James for their loved one’s funeral.

Adelaide Youth Orchestras

Alfred James is the Principal Partner of the Adelaide Youth Orchestras Senior Heroes Concerts. These hour-long concerts bring joy and youthful musical brilliance to residents of aged care facilities who often may not be able to attend quality external musical performances.

Carrick Hill

Carrick Hill, the stately home of Sir Edward Hayward and Lady Ursula Hayward (nee Barr-Smith) from 1939 was gifted to the people of South Australia on Sir Edward’s death in 1983. It is one of the few period homes in Australia to survive with its original contents almost completely intact, and is an important example of the lifestyle of two wealthy and cultured Australians of the mid-twentieth century.

Alfred James is the Principal Partner of the Spring program at Carrick Hill that brings together water-wise gardening, a passion for flowers, a unique historic house and garden, a world-class art collection and other activities. Alfred James is proud to offer Carrick Hill as a venue for a garden funeral.

Palliative Care Week SA

The Palliative Care Council South Australia (PCCSA) is the peak body for palliative care in South Australia. It is a not for profit organisation dedicated to supporting people living with terminal illness and those who care for them.

Alfred James shares Palliative Care’s values of respect and understanding and is the Principal Partner of Palliative Care Week SA. We also sponsor Advanced Care Planning sessions, which are run by Palliative Care SA in our Alfred James funeral homes.

SANDS and Solace Association

Alfred James was involved in the establishment of SANDS (Stillbirth And Neonatal Death) and Solace Association, an organisation that provides support for those grieving the loss of their partner. We are pleased to continue to support these organisations.
